In early May 1938, Hitler vistied Rome in order to promote political relations between Italy and Germany. Since 1936, the two countries had been bound as Axis powers, meaning that Hitler promoted the idea that the world would turn around them as major forces. The "special day" of this film is that of a grand rally and parade in Rome to welcome Hitler. We see the day not through the crowds or the spectacle, however, but through the experience of two people who do not attend the festivities, the housewife Antonietta and her neighbor Gabriele,
