MATH 2B LEC G: CALCULUS (44290)

*** FINAL ***
* Bring UCI ID to final

* Practice sample finals from resources: See http://sites.uci.edu/ptabrizi/math2bfa17/ for solutions to the example finals (see 1, 2, 3)!!!

***
How to prepare for midterm 1:
* practice the midterms from https://www.math.uci.edu/undergraduate/courses/calculus-2a2b-resources (also go over some of the summer ones)
* Two old midterms (for summer session, so you can't solve all problems): Midterm, Midterm
* Practice book problems (I would especially look at the review problems)
* Make sure you can solve problems correctly and quickly - you have 50 minutes to solve quite a lot of problems!
* Study hard - good luck!

BRING UCI ID

Course contents: Integration techniques, the fundamental theorem of calculus, applications of integration (finding areas, volumes), infinite sequences and series.

Note: parametric and polar equations are no longer included the syllabus of Math 2B. Exponential and logarithmic functions, inverse trigonometric functions, l’Hopital rule and exponential growth are now part of 2A.

Prerequisite: A grade of D- or better in Math 2A (Caution: if you scored C- or lower in Math 2A or have had time lapse since taking Math 2A, you should expect to work more to refresh your background.)

Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals or Single-Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals by James Stewart, 8th Edition, or UCI Custom Edition of the same textbook.

Attendance: You are responsible for the content of the lectures and discussions. The course moves very quickly so it is important that you attend class each day so that you do not fall behind. If you miss a class, you should get notes from a classmate. You are expected to review the relevant sections before their lecture, including a review of the section of the text or the recommended video (listed in the lecture guide and indexed in the class files below). I will assume that you have reviewed this material in advance.
You must attend the discussion section in which you are enrolled.

Homework: Graded homework is completed on WebWork. Assignments can be found at http://homework.ps.uci.edu/webwork/. Each assignment comes out on a Thursday, and due 8 days later on Friday by 11 p.m. The first homework is due October 20.
Higly recommended: Optional textbook problems can be found in Suggested extra homework. Although they will not be turned in, they are important preparation for the quizzes and exams.

Quizzes: There will be a quiz essentially every week (see schedule above). Lowest will be dropped.

Midterm Exams: There will be two midterm exams, scheduled for October 23 and November 15 in the lecture room during regular lecture time. The length will be 50 minutes.

Grades (40% Final, 20% Midterm (each), 10% Quizzes, 10% WebWorks). No curving of final grades will be done, though individual exams grade correlations may be adjusted soon after the exam. Students will be assigned a letter grade based on the standard UCI scale.
Makeups: There are no make-ups or extensions for quizzes or homework (even for excused absence). Make-up for the midterm is only for documented serious reasons (at my sole discretion), and only if you notify me by email before the exam.

Final Exam Makeups: It is expected that students will make every effort to take the final exam at the scheduled time. However, requests for a make-up final exam (in writing - the form is available from the department Final Exam policy page) will be considered under the following guidelines: ◾ A student will be granted a make-up if the Saturday final exam violates the student's religious creed.
◾ A student may be granted a make-up exam at the discretion of the course facilitator if the Saturday exam time would result in loss of wages constituting financial hardship, need for child care resulting in financial hardship, inability to procure transportation or loss of employment.
◾ A student may be granted a make-up exam at the discretion of the course facilitator if there is a verifiable emergency which prevents the student from taking the final exam at the scheduled time. Such emergencies include, but are not limited to, serious illness, death of an immediate family member, or serious accident.
◾ A student will be granted a make-up if he/she is enrolled in both Math 2A and Math 2B during the same quarter.

Class policies: (1) All quizzes and exams are closed book, no calculators or electronic devices.
(2) Photo ID required for exams. If your photo on your student ID is smudged or unrecognizable, bring another photo ID.
(3) Grades will only be assigned according to the breakdown as applied to all students. There are no extra credit assignments. Requests to have your grade changed for any reason other than an incorrect recording of scores will be denied.

Academic Integrity: Academic integrity will be enforced in all aspects of the course. Students are responsible for informing themselves of UCI's policies regarding academic dishonesty. Any student violating the policy is subject to penalties which may include receiving a zero on the work involved or receiving a grade of F in the course, as well as risk of suspension or probation. For more information, including your rights and responsibilities as a student, please see the link under 'Campus Resources' below, or go to: http://www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/appx/appx.2.htm.
