Reflection

What I really take away from the course is something that I think most students came to realize, and that was the intersectionality of many factors within society that can play a role with regards to inequality. Although the articles we read tried to focus on specific concepts or axes, and tried to look at groups as a whole and the way they are affected, I believe that individuality has to be accounted for. When I say individuality, I don’t necessarily mean individual choices made by a member of a group that is generalized as facing inequality. I am referring to different individual circumstances and the degree to which they play a part in a member's choices. In other words, the negative effect isn’t always necessarily felt the same for every member of that group. I believe this is because not everyone’s circumstances are identical or responded to the same, despite being in the same group. As we learned there are pro’s and con’s in all aspects of one’s inherent qualities; gender, race, upbringing, legal status, stereotypes, location, etc.

Throughout the quarter I couldn’t help but to be reflective of my own life. The class itself started with reflecting on our neighborhoods growing up and the role that they have played in our goals, aspirations, and what not. The different articles made me analyze the circumstances in which I was raised and in which I am now trying to raise my own children. For that reason, I decided to use myself as a case and point with regards to the intersectionality of the concepts we learned about. It might seem a bit anecdotal, but I felt like I could’ve very well been represented in many of the case studies within the articles, and so I feel my prior insight and current view can well describe my overall thoughts on inequality.

For that reason I am including some songs (youtube videos) and lyrics that I had done in the past when I was a teen and into my early 20’s, which reflect on the inequality that I was self-aware of at the time and which I reflected upon throughout the course. I will note them in their individual section titles and further delve into why I chose them within my final thought section. I will also include some discussion/video blog content that I feel ties into the specific subjects within songs on their given page.
