  • Prerequisites:  You must be currently enrolled in Chem 1C or have previously passed Chem 1C to be enrolled in Chem 1LC.
  • Change your lab section?  Use WebReg
    • No adds, drops, or grade changes allowed after week 1.
    • You must be prepared for the first lab section, no exceptions.
  • Enrollment Questions?  Contact the Chemistry Undergraduate Office:
    • undergrad@chem.ps.uci.edu, (949) 824-2895.
    • Office (NS2 1101) Hours: Week 1 (M-F 11 am -12 pm and 1-2:30 pm); All other weeks (MWF 11 am - 12 pm & TuTh 1-2:30 pm)

Grading

  • Experiments: 8 experiments will be performed, each worth 50 points.  Points are distributed between procedures, data, observations, calculations, and results.
    • Experiments up to 1 week late will be accepted, but penalized 25% of the possible points.
    • Experiments will be graded within 1 week with feedback.
    • The lowest experiment score is dropped, so one absence will not affect your grade.  (Exception: The week 3 experiment is partially graded on Sapling and will not be dropped.)
    • If a student has missed 2 experiments and is doing passing work, s/he will be assigned an "I" and need to make up 1 experiment by auditing the course in the next summer session.  (Summer session fees are required to audit.)  Missing 3 or more experiments will result in an automatic "F".
  • Sapling Electronic Homework:  Sapling work consists of mostly prelab and computational assignments.
    • Before entering lab week 1, the safety quiz, the safety agreement, and the honesty agreement must be completed.
    • No Sapling scores are dropped, NO exceptions.
    • Check the Sapling website for the most accurately due dates and point values.
    • Sapling homework must be completed or the TA will not allow you into lab.
  • Lab Practical:  Given during the regular laboratory period in week 9 or 10.
    • Content: 2 mini-experiments derived directly from the experiments performed in the course (200 points) and 1 data set requiring calculations (50 points).
    • Procedures are given, but not in as much detail as the manual.

This quarter, we will be participating in a study to determine the efficacy of education videos called, DanceChemistry, in aiding in your understanding of different chemistry topics. More information about this study is provided here: Study Info SheetView in a new window. If you have any questions about this study, please email Gidget Tay attayg@uci.edu. Opting out of the study will not affect your grade in any way. Directions for how to opt out of the study are listed on the study info sheet.

Honesty: Many experiments call for collaboration between partners, but written lab work must be an individual effort.  The course honesty policy is clearly outlined in the honesty agreement on Sapling.  UC Irvine's Honesty Policy can be found at: http://honesty.uci.edu/students.html.
