Hello and welcome to E112L Spring 2016 physiology lab. This page is for Jennifer Briner’s Spring 2016 lab sections. If you’re looking for Dr. Aguilar-Roca’s physiology discussion page instead, click here.

TA: Jennifer Briner

Classroom: SH 272

Office hours: MH 5248, 3:00-4:00 Thursday

Email: jbriner@uci.edu

Class times: Tues 9:00 am  11:50 am, Tues 1:00 pm  3:50 pm

Attendance

You must attend your assigned section unless given explicit permission. If you have a good reason to attend another section (e.g. surgery, funeral), please let me know as soon as possible. Missed labs must be made up the same week because the classroom will only be set up for a specific week's activity for that one week. You must get approval in advance of showing up to make up a lab. There will be no makeup labs after the scheduled week for any given lab - if you miss lab on Tuesday, get your makeup approved and completed by Friday.

Grading

Lab contributes 40.4% of your overall course grade through a combination of short quizzes, assignments, and participation in activities.

For more details on grading, see the main course syllabus.

Personal Conduct

You are expected to conduct yourselves professionally, with honesty, integrity, and respect. However to avoid classroom chaos, here are some specific rules of classroom conduct:

  1. Be on time. Showing up late to class is disruptive and rude. If you are chronically late, I may dock points.
  2. Do not engage in side conversations during discussion/mini-lecture time. They are extremely distracting to me and to your fellow students. If you have a question, please raise your hand and ask it. If you don’t want to ask during discussion, ask me during office hours.
  3. No food or open drinks at the work stations. Please leave it at the front.
  4. Follow the lab dress code. Lab coats/aprons and goggles will be needed for some labs. Extras are available in the lab for you to borrow, but if you have them you should bring your own. You must wear closed toed shoes and long pants/skirts to lab. I am not allowed to let you participate if you aren’t dressed appropriately. (A dissection kit is not needed.)
  5. Leave during class for emergencies only. If you have to leave during class, please try to minimize the disruption. If you must arrive late or leave early for a particular class, please let me know in advance.
  6. Use your laptop for course-related purposes only. If you have a laptop computer or tablet you may bring it to lab. The lab computers aren’t the fastest, so personal devices can be useful for recording data, doing calculations, and running searches. However, please be sensitive to not distract others while using your laptop.

Contacting Me

I will be available during posted office hours. I will do my best to respond to your emails within 24 hours during the work week. I enjoy hearing from students and I will be even happier to hear from you if you observe the following guidelines:

  1. Email Responsibly. I will not answer email questions about information readily available on the course website, such as lab report and exam dates, etc.
  2. Use a relevant subject line (e.g. Bio E112L, Tuesday Lab, Physiology Lab, etc.)
  3. Keep it readable - reasonable grammar and punctuation.
  4. Sign off with the name you prefer to be called.

Accommodations for Students

I am happy to provide accommodations for students with learning or physical disabilities. Please identify yourself to me during the first week of class; any discussions will be kept fully confidential unless you state otherwise. All requests for alternate exam policies will be coordinated through the UCI Disability Services Center: http://www.disability.uci.edu

We will be dissecting and vivisecting animals this quarter. If you are uncomfortable with dissections, you may step outside during the dissection portion of the lab. If you decide to do this, please identify yourself to me before leaving the classroom and make sure that you have a member of your group retrieve you when they are done with the dissection.

Academic Honesty

There is zero tolerance for cheating in this class. In the event of cheating, the appropriate campus-wide policies will be followed, including contacting the appropriate deans. Refer to http://www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/appx/appx.2.htm for details. Academic dishonesty or cheating is defined as an intentional act of fraud in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or efforts of another. This includes assisting other students in acts of dishonesty or coercing students into acts of dishonesty, whether it is on writing, lab work, or exams. If you are not sure if something is cheating or not, ask.
