In the latter half of the quarter a good deal of our time will be spent on developing and programming more advanced sonic/musical projects. You may work on a project by yourself or you may collaborate with one or two of your classmates. If the latter, you’ll be working in small groups of two or three students.
The goal is to complete a finished application in Max or JavaScript (or some other language of your choice) that performs a useful task or new idea related to audio/music. It might be an implementation of an existing idea based on existing models, or (ideally) an innovative extension of an existing idea or a novel concept/exploration.
Although we’ve so far studied only a subset of the topics listed in the syllabus—and of course we’ll continue studying more in the coming weeks—you can use the topics listed in the syllabus as an initial impetus for your own ideas. You can also use some of the ideas listed below as a starting point.
On the one hand, you'll want to choose a project that seems feasible within the remaining 4-5 weeks. On the other hand, don’t avoid a challenging and imaginative and ambitious project just because you don’t know how to do it yet. Researching, experimenting, and trying new things is largely the point of these projects.
The first step is to brainstorm ideas. Spend some time thinking about this, discussing it with classmates and teachers, and exploring what work has already been done relevant to your ideas. Post it in the Discussions, int the thread devoted to project ideas, and submit to the Canvas dropbox for this assignment, and come to class ready to discuss, three project ideas that you would like to do, prioritized in order of your preference and interest level.
Here are just a few types of projects ideas one might develop into something more specific.
