Course description

Welcome to Music 47 Intro to Telematics. Telematic music or Networked Music Performance refers to realtime music over the internet. This has been the research subject of only a relatively small group of musicians and researchers up until very recently. With the pandemic, many musicians got stuck at home, unable to play in person with others. Being able to configure and understand what makes a good connection for performing music over the internet has never been so important. This is what we will learn about in this course:

  • Telematics: what is it and how to experiment with it
  • Digital audio: how audio works inside the computer
  • Collaborating: finding good online working practice

Requirements

This will be a very hands on course. Though you don’t need to be a musician to take this course you need a computer (not chromebook) with microphone, a set of headphones, good internet connection (preferably connected via ethernet LAN cable), and, of course, be excited about learning about music over the internet! Optionally, but of great advantage to the work we’ll be doing, you may have an external audio interface and microphone.

Student Learning Objectives

After successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Establish a connection with open source software for performing music over the internet
  • Understand digital audio and resolve simple problems
  • Engage in collaborations online (including in Github)
  • Appreciate the creative and technical efforts of musicians and researchers in the field

Week plan

Each week we will meet for 2 sessions, and after each session you will have homework. The first homework (HWa) is due Thursday at 10AM PST, and the second homework (HWb) is due Monday 11:59PM PST. The only exception is for the homework before week 3, which all have the hard deadline on Monday 11:59PM PST of week 3, to account for any enrollment changes.

  • week 01: What is telematics
  • week 02: What is digital audio
  • week 03: What the world needs now: collaborating on the internet
  • week 04: Welcome to quacktrip
  • week 05: Midterm and what's next
  • week 06: Small ensembles
  • week 07: Class ensemble
  • week 08: Hold my mic: FX and routing audio between applications
  • week 09: Live streaming
  • week 10: The Quacks go on a trip
  • finals week: [Not meeting]
  • Final Project due: Thu, Mar 18, 3:30pm

Evaluation

Attendance and participation in all sessions and submission of all assignments by the deadline is expected. Course grades are determined as follows:

  • Attendance and participation: 30%
  • Homework assignments: 40%
  • Midterm exam: 10%
  • Final project: 20%

All late assignments (homework, midterm and final project) will be penalized by 10% per day late. Canvas adds these penalties automatically based on the submission time. In cases of severe illness or genuine emergencies that might justify an extension or excused absence, you must contact the instructor with an explanation, and you must be able to provide documentation. Your attendance grade will also be lowered if you do not regularly participate in class. If your participation is not meeting expectations by mid-quarter, you will receive a note from the instructor alerting you to this.

No regrades will be offered. If you are having any trouble with the assignments, it is important to seek help as early as possible - ask questions during class time (!), and see “Office Hour” for how to contact me.

Scale:

  • A+ 100% to 96.5%
  • A < 96.5% to 93.5%
  • A- < 93.5% to 90%
  • B+ < 90% to 86.5%
  • B < 86.5% to 83.5%
  • B- < 83.5% to 80%
  • C+ < 80% to 76.5%
  • C < 76.5% to 73.5%
  • C- < 73.5% to 70%
  • D+ < 70% to 66.5%
  • D < 66.5% to 63.5%
  • D- < 63.5% to 60%
  • F < 60% to 0%

Academic Integrity

There will be several collaborative assignments but there will also be other assignments where you are required not to collaborate with others, such as the midterm quiz. All work submitted must be your own original work, and all sources consulted must be properly cited, be it text, code, or any other kind of media.

Plagiarism is a direct violation of University policy on Academic Honesty. You are expected to attribute due credit to the originator of any words, music, programming code, or other ideas that you incorporate into your work and final presentation. All students are expected to adhere to the UCI Academic Integrity Policies, and policy violations such as presenting others' work as your own without attribution will be reported. (For more information, please visit these links [1] [2]).

Disability Services

If you have a disability that affects your performance in this course, you should document it through the Disabilities Services Center and have them contact the instructor with a contract by the end of the first week of the quarter. No special arrangements will be made for disabilities without going through this process.
