i>Clicker Student Response System - Optional but recommended (Required for extra credit)

We will be using the i>clicker student response system in class. i>clicker helps us to understand your knowledge of the material and gives everyone a chance to participate in class. Be sure to use the same clicker at every class for the entire quarter.  You may choose to use one type of i>Clicker for the entire quarter (and stick with it):

  • The original i>clicker, i>clicker +, i>clicker 2, OR
  • The mobile application, REEF Polling will be allowed (See below.)

Clicker Registration Requirements: To be eligible to receive any extra credit for the responses that you submit with i>clicker, you must properly register your clicker on Canvas using Google Chrome and a laptop by the drop/add deadline. Students who register after this time will not be eligible.

You must register your clicker device through the course page on Canvas. Using Chrome as your web browser will avoid registration issues. If you have problems with the clicker registration through Canvas, try a different browser. You can find the clicker ID number on the bar code on the back of the clicker. If you’re using a pre-owned clicker, there is no need for the previous owner to unregister, and when you register through the Canvas course page, there is no fee for registering a previously used clicker. IMPORTANT: Do NOT use the Canvas phone app to register your iClicker.

Special instructions for REEF Polling

You must register using your @uci.edu email and use the exact name as shown in EEE/Canvas.  To create a REEF Polling account, Visit https://reef-education.com or download the app for iOS or Android. Creating an account automatically starts a free 14-day trial subscription. (Please use this trial period to make sure REEF will work for all of your i>clicker classes before purchasing a subscription, as it is not possible to receive a refund after you purchase a subscription.) NOTE: New i>clicker remotes will now ship with a complimentary digital access code for REEF Polling.  Students can use this code to try REEF for one quarter at no charge.

When creating your REEF account, be sure that your account has ALL of the following profile information:

1) Name must match EEE/Canvas E-X-A-C-T-L-Y

2) Email: Use your UCI email address

3) Student ID: Your 8-digit student number

Academic Integrity with Clickers

Using a fellow student’s i>clicker in class is considered cheating and a violation of the University Honor Code. Students caught with a remote other than their own or who have votes in a class that they did not attend, will forfeit all clicker points and will likely be reported to the office of academic integrity and student conduct.

Class Policies

Personal Conduct

You are expected to conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the UCI Principles of Community:

  • Respect - for people and property, including classmates, T.A.’s, guest presenters, and your instructor.
  • Intellectual Curiosity - commitment to learning, teaching, creativity, and research.
  • Integrity - being truthful and striving to earn the trust of those around us.*
  • Commitment - consistently putting forth our best interest.
  • Empathy - acting with compassion and sensitivity at all times.
  • Appreciation - appreciating different opinions and points of view.
  • Fun - enjoying our lives to the fullest while maintaining balance.

*If you observe academic dishonesty or misconduct, you are expected to bring it to the immediate attention of any member of the teaching team. You will remain anonymous.

Missed Classes If you miss a class session, it is your responsibility to complete and submit any missed assignments after checking with classmates and on the discussion board, Canvas (announcements, discussions, modules), Connect, and/or the syllabus schedule. Please contact the teaching assistant team for any clarification. Assignments cannot be accepted after the posted due dates.

Exams - Two valid and clear photo ID cards are required. One MUST be your official UCI Photo ID Card and the other must be a government-issued ID (driver’s license).  UCI ID Photos must be clear and a valid representation of your appearance. Also bring at least one flat F288 Scantron and at least one #2 pencil. Carefully check your position on the seating assignment chart. If you are late, you will not be admitted for the exam once another student has left the lecture hall. Phones, SMART watches, and ALL other electronic devices must be stored inside of your zipped backpack along with all other items and papers.

Incomplete Grades  Only students in good standing at the time of the request (having a “C” or better in the course) AND who cannot complete the class because of a documented emergency (such as an illness or accident verified with a doctor’s note or police report) will be eligible for an “Incomplete”. An incomplete grade is NOT permitted simply because a student is not doing well in the course.

Academic Honesty  There is a zero tolerance for cheating in this class, including “clicking in” for someone else. Your instruction team will be watching for this. If you are seen with two i>clickers during class at any time, this will be treated as cheating. In the event of cheating, the appropriate campus-wide policies will be followed, including contacting the appropriate deans. Refer to the student code of conduct for details. Academic dishonesty or cheating is defined as an intentional act of fraud in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or efforts of another. This includes assisting other students in acts of dishonesty or coercing students into acts of dishonesty. If you are not sure if something is cheating, please ask for clarification.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities  Please feel free to identify yourself to me by Canvas Mail and after class during the first week of the quarter so that we may discuss strategies that will enhance your learning experience. All discussions will be confidential unless you state otherwise. Requests for alternate exam policies are coordinated through the UCI Disability Services Center.

Contacting Professor Messina and the Teaching Team  Please use the Canvas discussion board for the majority of course questions. As you know, this is a large lecture class. We will do our best to respond within 24-48 hours. We are on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays only and are happy to speak with you after class. Weekly virtual office hours using Zoom will also be available. Please see Canvas announcements for dates/times. Teaching Assistants may be contacted through Canvas Inbox (Mail) for clarification about assignment requirements.

  • i>clicker - Optional but required for extra credit participation/quizzes during class - REGISTER THROUGH CANVAS ONLY USING A LAPTOP WITH CHROME.    UCI i>clicker; support.iclicker.com, Email: support@iclicker.com, (866) 209-5698

Verify that your i>clicker is properly registered through Canvas, has new batteries (not Duracell), is set for the correct lecture hall frequency, and that your points are being recorded in the Canvas course space once posted. It is the student’s responsibility to monitor iClicker points. Contact i>Clicker support if issues arise.

Clicker frequency: The Frequency is AA for the Schneiderman Lecture Hall.

Important: It is recommended that you use Energizer, Rayovac, Eveready or another brand name battery in your clicker.  Duracell (and some generic brand) batteries can cause a problem in the device due to differences in the dimensions on the inside of the remote and the positive battery terminal that keep the two from making contact. Good batteries should last around 200 hours of class time.

Mobile Apps and Other Tech Resources  From time to time, we may utilize mobile apps such as Poll Everywhere (PollEv), Fooducate, or Argus to complete specific assignments. Many students find the Canvas app to be very helpful. Use of a laptop in class is recommended for group assignments. If needed, please feel free to sit next to another student who has access to a smartphone, tablet and/or laptop..
