Course contents: Integration techniques, the fundamental theorem of calculus, applications of integration (finding areas, volumes and arc length), infinite sequences and series.
Note: parametric and polar equations are no longer included the syllabus of Math 2B. Exponential and logarithmic functions, inverse trigonometric functions, l’Hopital rule and exponential growth are now part of 2A.
Prerequisite: A grade of D- or better in Math 2A (Caution: if you scored C- or lower in Math 2A or have had time lapse since taking Math 2A, you should expect to work more to refresh your background.)
Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals or Single-Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals by James Stewart, 8th Edition, or UCI Custom Edition of the same textbook.
You must attend the discussion section in which you are enrolled.
Final Exam Makeups: It is expected that students will make every effort to take the final exam at the scheduled time. However, requests for a make-up final exam (in writing - the form is available from the department Final Exam policy page) will be considered under the following guidelines: ◾ A student will be granted a make-up if the Saturday final exam violates the student's religious creed.
◾ A student may be granted a make-up exam at the discretion of the course facilitator if the Saturday exam time would result in loss of wages constituting financial hardship, need for child care resulting in financial hardship, inability to procure transportation or loss of employment.
◾ A student may be granted a make-up exam at the discretion of the course facilitator if there is a verifiable emergency which prevents the student from taking the final exam at the scheduled time. Such emergencies include, but are not limited to, serious illness, death of an immediate family member, or serious accident.
◾ A student will be granted a make-up if he/she is enrolled in both Math 2A and Math 2B during the same quarter.
Class policies: (1) All quizzes and exams are closed book, no calculators or electronic devices.
(2) Photo ID required for exams. If your photo on your student ID is smudged or unrecognizable, bring another photo ID.
(3) Grades will only be assigned according to the breakdown as applied to all students. There are no extra credit assignments. Requests to have your grade changed for any reason other than an incorrect recording of scores will be denied.
Academic Integrity: Academic integrity will be enforced in all aspects of the course. Students are responsible for informing themselves of UCI's policies regarding academic dishonesty. Any student violating the policy is subject to penalties which may include receiving a zero on the work involved or receiving a grade of F in the course, as well as risk of suspension or probation. For more information, including your rights and responsibilities as a student, please see the link under 'Campus Resources' below, or go to: http://www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/appx/appx.2.htm.
