A Graduate of Columbia University School of Social Work with over 20 years of experience as a therapist, Janice Michaelson argues in her poetry review that the plums in the poem are a sexual symbol. She published a poetry review for an intellectual journal in the field of literature. She uses in-text quotes and outside scholastic journals to  prove her point. Michaelson gears this article to an audience interested in the analysis of Williams’ poem and scholars that are part of the poetry community that will take her literary analysis into consideration.

Rehana Whately, an english professor at Oakwood University, argues that the audience in “The Cask of Amontillado” is a priest because Montresor makes references to God. She constructs a thesis based argument for an academic journal in the field of literature. Whately uses textual evidence and implements outside sources that support her argument. Her audience can be narrowed down to her students and to those studying Poe’s literature in order to demonstrate that Montresor is sorry for murdering Fortunato.

Patrick White, a notable American writer, argues that Montresor’s character feels that his actions are justified because he is dedicating himself to the family’s coat of arms. He constructs a thesis-driven academic argument for an academic book in the field of literature. White cites scholarly articles that have examined Poe’s works. His examination of short stories should be required reading for anyone interested in analyzing Poe’s literature and other short stories.

Williams Carlos Williams, a prominent American poet and doctor, challenges the conventions of a confession as a genre with the development of a speaker that satirically admits to the consumption of plums that did not belong to the speaker. Williams composes a poem with confession as a genre. He demonstrates his message by creating a playful tone and ironic situation that challenges the traditional definition of a confession. Williams’ purpose of  writing for his own pleasure appeals to an audience that can be narrowed down to those who are interested in American poetry.

Nasari constructed a scholarly article for a scientific journal in the field of psychiatry. Her extensive research that investigated the 10-year outcome of a relationship analyzed the marital satisfaction in correlation with emotional intelligence proves her results. This article addresses scholars in the psychology and sociology field.
