Artifacts: Writing Exercises

Throughout the five weeks I have been in Writing 39B I have noticed within my writing some developmental growth. Some of the class exercises that I had completed in this course help indicate how far I’ve came as a writer from Week 1 to the present time. An example is the assignment Critical Reading #1 (https://canvas.eee.uci.edu/eportfolios/19458/entries/217423/files/leuJkUEiNwXHqUqEU3ZzKIpdtc4Dg65ReuhL5ciN) where I had my first attempt into writing a Rhetorical Analysis piece. If you compare this assignment to my Rhetorical Analysis Final Draft Essay (https://canvas.eee.uci.edu/eportfolios/19458/entries/217423/files/xZ8Bmik2Kem1AEjVATjdCi6iVTaJm95fXVnafGt1) there is quite a contrast between the two. I have noticed they are a bit similar in the five-paragraph structure, but the evidence and elaboration I placed in the RA Assignment is much more lengthier and elaborate than the Critical Reading 1 assignment. This is one example that marks my growth as a writer through Writing 39B. Another assignment that has shown my growth as a writer is the Critical Reading #2 (https://canvas.eee.uci.edu/eportfolios/19458/entries/217423/files/0IG08m9MBUbqVeLL92oe6RvCGN7nr4mRNZhvPOLE) assignment where I started practicing incorporating outside sources into my writings. This class exercise provided me a first attempt of bringing outside sources to my essay where I was analyzing another story. Through this assignment, it provided me a foundation to refine my ability at integrating sources to supplement my argument or message. If you were to compare the Critical Reading #2 assignment to my Rhetorical Analysis Assignment (https://canvas.eee.uci.edu/eportfolios/19458/entries/217423/files/xZ8Bmik2Kem1AEjVATjdCi6iVTaJm95fXVnafGt1) you may notice a big gap on how proficient I’ve grown in utilizing this tool. For example, in the Critical Reading 2 exercise my connections using the outside source into my primary writing was very sloppy and the connections I are very faint and weak. When you look at one of my body paragraphs in the Rhetorical Analysis essay you may notice I have gotten better at tying the two different sources together. I have also improved at the analysis when connecting the two different sources together in contrast with the Critical Reading #2 assignment which was mediocre at best. Last assignment that has helped propel development as a writer in Writing 39B was the assignment Critical Reading #4 (https://canvas.eee.uci.edu/eportfolios/19458/entries/217423/files/CGmjYyx018PicWqYTJ4JO5ZIehUCAqrvv3c3srH6). With this assignment, it had given me deeper insight to the power that rhetorical devices yield. This assignment also acted as a halfway point for my understanding of rhetorical devices if you compare back to Critical Reading #1 and my final Rhetorical Analysis essay. This assignment had helped further propel my understanding of rhetoric before I started my Rhetorical Analysis essay, and like the Critical Reading #1 assignment it had helped layering on my understanding of rhetoric till now. If you were to compare the Critical Reading #1 and Critical Reading #4 assignments I believe I have shown vast improvement in my analysis and my analysis is also much more elaborate on how it affects the author’s message. But if you were to compare the Critical Reading #4 to my final draft of my Rhetorical Analysis essay it once again created a big fissure to how in-depth my analysis had reached especially when considering the addition of outside sources. Overall these assignments have shown me my maturation as a writer and how far I have come back in Week 1 to now in the present time.
