Former State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O’Connell focused on early-childhood education in California. Preschool learning foundations was released on January 22, 2008 and got lots of attention, especially for parents. In 2013, President Obama addressed to support early-childhood education. In this competitive society, everything is based on score. Data-driven education leaders and parents put test score on the top of the list. Moreover, the latest results of the Program for International Student Assessment indicated that there is a positive relationship between early-childhood education and future grades. In a word, the earlier a child start to learn, the better grade he would get in the future. I would wonder if I start go to preschool at two or three years old, I would go to better school today, such as Stanford or Connell. Early-childhood education provide learning and development opportunities for preschool children. People have ability to remember things more easily and quickly when they are young. The amazing thing is that babies even can recognize sound and other stimulations when in their mother’s womb. Do these reasons mean we have to send babies to preschool as early as possible ?
With the increased demand of preschool, there are different types of programs of preschool in California. According to the quality of program and area various, the price is different. Some preschools costs more than 30K a year, which is about the fee to go to universities. Achievement gap is enlarged by sending children to preschool in their early-childhood. Some poor people can’t afford preschool fee for their child, while the rich have ability to get their children to the greatest preschool and accept the most high-quality education .
With the increasingly number of established preschool, the demand for effective teachers is also increasing rapidly. However, recruiting effective teachers is not easy for every preschool. Children are supposed to learn knowledge in preschool, but some ineffective teachers only take care of their kids, just like babysitters. For parents, they just throw money to preschool to ask them to take care of their kids but not teach their children to learn knowledge and prepared for future academic work.
In order to keep pace with this competitive society, parents push their children to learn too early, which bring them an intangible pressure. Children are too fragile to be under pressure. In their early-childhood, they begin to be compared with peers. The vocabulary, the speaking ability and writing skill all become the standard to judge a child whether is smart or not. Early-childhood education limits children’ creativity and imagination. In their early age, they have to accept what teachers say and do what teachers want to. Gradually, these children are likely to be more silence and introverted. In other word, the appearance of preschool might be helpful for children’ future test score, but it also sacrifices the most important and precious thing of children, which is creativity and imagination. This is unfair for these two or three years old young kids .
