RIP Exercise 3: Rhetoric of Murder

The style of a story can reveal a wide range of information as well as evoke tones to suggest and further inform the audience of a scene or character. In this assignment, I felt a deep connection with my artistic career. Similar to drawing for a specific audience, this assignment helped me in my path to developing an idea to the way style and formality of a piece evoke a certain "stereotypical" scene, mood, etc. Ultimately, developing an environment where the scenes would evoke a particular idea where the reader would probably intrinsically or heuristically come to understand, thus being ensnared in the author's rhetoric scheme.

RIP Exercise 3: “Fitcher’s Bird”

  1. Amongst the rumors that have been circulating around town, the man responsible for the recent kidnapping of girls has been found and killed. However, there is yet to find evidence of such. I’ve interrogated some men and those who claim to be victims of the kidnapper. However, upon investigation, the girls who claim to be victims, two of them said that they were chopped to pieces and one of them said that the kidnapper was a sorcerer. Upon further note, the youngest daughter claims that she pieced her sisters back together. It is in all respects impossible, even with the best doctors and surgeons this day in age to perfectly sew and stitch, yet alone bring back the dead. The men and everyone who were said to be involved of wiping out this kidnapper were all the same family, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins. It is hardly sufficient evidence to draw a conclusion. There is another thing at hand, there were multiple bones found within the burned building, said to have been the home of the kidnapper and his gang. The youngest daughter said that she was to be married to him and invited 20 (all) of the kidnapper’s friends, however, my co-workers and I found not only 20 whole skeletons, but a whole mound of broken bones, enough to count about 23 additional bodies. Moreover, the size and shape of the hip bone from within that pile all resemble that of a young teenage girl. Thus, this matches the testimonies of the witnesses and rumors. However, this homicide with a little more than 40 bodies is evident enough to say that there is one to be guilty. But because of all the burnt bodies, and our lack of technology, I cannot say whether those within the house were truly guests or mere victims of the family who burned the house as an act of “revenge.” So as of now, I hold the people responsible for burning those inside the house guilty of their actions. While the kidnapper and his gang’s actions are still to be determined.
  2. In the middle the dark forest out in the fields, there happened to be a large fire. However, authorities say that it is still being investigated on the cause of such a huge fire. Eye witnesses say that the family with three daughters and their relatives were there on the scene, all with torches in hand. Curious for the reason, I asked about their recent accusation and they said, “have you ever heard about girls gone missing? That a poor man would snatch them away at the front of their doorstep? Well our girls were all kidnapped by him. The first one disappeared for a few days, then the second one, then the third one. We were terrified. We notified to police, but they had no clue. One day, two of our girls came back and told us what had happened. The kidnapper, the murderer, the sorcery, where he lived, everything. So we just went to take care of the business since no girl has come back from being kidnapped.” Upon hearing this, I asked the authorities whether the fire was a murder site of murderers. The authorities ignored me. However, after asking many people who have lost their daughters, all saying that they had been kidnapped, it is quite evident that the mysterious kidnapper that has been roaming and preying on young girls within this village is now gone, along with the fire that was burning in that forest.
  3. Defending the deceased kidnapper for murder: The extra bodies found within the burnt house is not enough to prove that the man who is being tried for is the correct suspect. The man bought that estate in the past 2 weeks, and as the blueprint of the plan states, there was no such room when he bought it. In fact, that room was said to be in a small corner where no one would be able to access regularly. It is most likely a hidden wall where the previous owner was the murderer and kidnapper and as he was unable to keep his property, that he sealed the room and sold it to my defendant. And to that extent, I have tracked many accounts of the previous owner’s records and have found him guilty of the act of kidnapping a girl in a nearby town. Thus I tell you, my honor, that the defendant, in this case, is not only innocent but is also a victim of the previous owner’s deeds.
  4. I tried to emphasize that because the bodies were all burnt that it was impossible to identify the difference between those murdered by the kidnapper and the wedding guests. And to that extent, I then tried to connect that the family who burnt the house with people inside were the murderers of people attending a wedding. In doing so, it is no longer valid to say that the kidnapper murdered the other girls he had kidnapped. However, the state of the dismembered bodies would be obvious as those burnt wouldn’t have their bones scattered, in fact, those who are burned to death would have at least some skeletal structure to be intact. Thus, I decided to add another piece of evidence, outside of the text, about the impossibility of the kidnapper to have ever known about such a room. Providing sufficient evidence through documents and introducing another suspect, I then pointed another logical reason to believe that he knew suspect is actually the murderer who is also still alive while the defendant is deceased. Thus proving to be a somewhat credible and logical approach because documents are probably the best source of evidence there is.
