Self-Assessment Reflections

After one quarter of learning writing 39B, I have learnt what is the meaning of rhetoric, how we could compose our writings rhetorically and a few points related to my course themes. To be considered as a writer, I still have weaknesses, like how to figure out the best way to organize my writing based on its genre and how to read and provide suggestions on revising others’ writings. Since this course would be more focused on collaborating research materials with our own writings, as an international student, I still need to improve my ability on reading faster and locating useful sources for my references.

On my major perspective which is related to computer science, writing and thinking logically is the main ability I need to focus on since I would need to operate various functions in a giant program for my future career life. Also, as I mentioned in the first paragraph that my weakness is how to connect different paragraphs in my writings together, I still need to practice on how to improve the flow of my writing for audiences to keep track on. However, one strength I have is that it’s easy for me to generate new ideas and key point I want to write for a piece of writing and I’m good at the prewriting process which allows me to throw all my ideas onto the paper. So the problem is always that I have many things to write but I don’t know how to organize them.

According to my reading ability, since my reading speed is not so fast, I’m not good at doing research which requires me to read lots of papers and then drag out keys points from these papers which related to my own writing. On the other hand, doing research is not only the process for me to find concrete ideas, I also need to fully understand others’ writing in order to paraphrase them into my writings or use them as references. Therefore, I need to read rhetorically and understand some deep meanings behind the paper in order to use them more appropriately. According to the course outcome, I also need to distinguish different types of articles and writing genres which could further help me to understand a piece of writing and drag out useful information.

All in all, I’m looking forward to get further writing improvements this summer in writing 39C and as I move deeper and deeper on writing, I start to realize the importance of learning writing and how writing is closely related to all professional careers.
