Opening Remarks

Placed at end of the WR39 series when I entered UCI, my papers authored in high school and during my time concurrently enrolled at a community college contained elements I understood as foundational to argument and research. Brief introductions, strong scholarly sources, and critical analysis on the thesis at stake. I easily intimidated myself into questioning my preparedness, even with my introduction to this class containing a collection of previous work with scholarly sources and argumentation; simultaneously brushing over my engagement with research for an anthropology class on Environmental Injustice in the quarter prior.

Even with a concrete foundation, I was never satisfied with my writing, but I wanted to appreciate my prose the same way others did (watch Artifact 1). Expressing this to my professor at the beginning of the year, they sarcastically asked, “So, you’re a writer?” Throwing myself through the writing process again this quarter, WR39C challenged my foundations to writing, and further developed my abilities as an author and researcher by encouraging me to be more flexible with elements of my prose like the introduction and evidence, along with the methods of signposting and providing guidance further strengthening my paper’s argument.

Alongside the act of writing, engaging with this class’s topic was fundamental in creating strong rhetoric. I understood our country’s deeply rooted issues of race entering this class but learning about mass incarceration expanded my perspective to include the incarceration system. Watching 13th by Ava DuVernay had me asking why private prisons exist (see Artifact 2). Reading Chapter 3 of City of Inmates by Kelly Hernandez had me stunned reading the accounts of those alienated by the Chinese Exclusion Act but left me unsurprised at the conclusion and actions of Americans during the time. These two notable works influenced the way I presented my writing, and the way I engaged with my audience.
