Self-Assessment ( A first step to better writing)

Before even starting to learn more about writing, I  have finished this self assessment practice as an way of summarizing and review again what I had picked up in the prior two courses. Never have I ever investigated how writer might intend to set his/her argument in such a way to persuade or simply gain some credibility from readers in my past writing life before entering the realm of academic writing. Few strategies I learned are efficient in terms of dissecting the complex body paragraph into several smaller pieces where you can analyze each individual part separately. And finally see if in all they serve to convey central idea to the audience or create a sense of believe among audience. I used anecdote, rhetorical questions and appeals to authority heavily now. And before these, I loved using analogy and comparison for they are easy to spot and to write something about. That obviously altered as time goes when I gradually understand one fine essay can allure audience’s attention and resonate with them. Writing with a purpose means a lot to me both as a writer and a reader. And in learning WR39C I would like to bring my ideas about those strategies into further depth and analyze how better using these strategies connecting with the audience. As an example of how I used my strategies, assume that I am writing a romance story, I would focus on protagonists’ daily events with the destined one to mark a difference from before using changes in behaviors and attitudes. And certainly, rhetorical questions generated in main characters’ heart for the audience to say the answer. And conclusions from experienced wise people for advice. There are a bunch of discussions in other classes, and one could use something attained from WR39C when cope with short yet concise response. Steps goes from browsing the whole prompt and underscore important key words to match how that might be answered using the short essay one just read. It is paraphrasing and appeal to authority/data that can possibly gain trust from teachers and clearly states main arguments. For instance, I will first put prompt asked words and formulas on my response to show relevance and then quote expert phrase to show authority and make the whole response in all a concise yet clear answer. WR39 series had certainly make a difference in how I write and read even outside of curriculum. I am more concerned whether I have sufficient data or personal facts when I am trying to convince someone of something. Or if I do not have any of them, I would certainly emphasize more on how my audience would feel if they did so. For example, when I ask friends out for dinner, I would suggest there are fine movies out lately or it had been six months since we last met.

Context Project Proposal
As an initial step to the first major essay in this class, I have been well practiced in setting up my original topic and techniques that I may want to use to attract the audience and investigate the scholarly sources of my chosen topic and arguments. As some human induced climate change becomes rampant, there is also a rising alert on water qualities and how that might be altered by former changes. Five related research are drowning my attention and each their focus are different yet affiliated to the same water quality topic.More and more people are realizing climate change is harmful to environment and a series of side effects follow through. Water quality could be one that the majority are recognizing and are concerned about. Yet little is known about several more specified effects of the climate change on water quality like the contaminants, or intensity of rainfalls, or even air temperatures. Experts in this area had all dig into further depth upon this issue and managed to raise several differentiated yet specific contentions. They approach this topic by investigating the chemical compounds, intensity of raining, or comparison experiment to gather data and difference to achieve their final conclusions. The major differences in approach occur during how the article’s purpose may vary, for instance, one could incline to explaining the drinking water quality and supply (Delpla,2009) and the other tends to be more intrigued by a specific region’s geographic change and water quality (Murdoch, Peter S.,,2000). Based on their interest of investigation, they provided distinct mechanisms and ideas which could contribute to my essay. In terms the scope of my project, I would follow a general to specific principle which would broadly states what kind of influence climate change could bring to water quality and how scientific evidence had shown these statements were true. Then concentrating on one specific region like North American and one specific idea like the intensity of floods to dig deeper. My topic could change based on that I wanted to narrow my topic and it could become flood intensity on water quality in North America to fit the size of my CP project prompt.
Certain challenges presents as I move further investigating the topic which is too many branches of scientist’s way of showing water quality changes. It’s hard for me to identify which one to choose as my main argument for my CP project. And since lots of them used different scientific approaches, it would take much of essay’s length to introduce these and thus elaborate on my evidence and main arguments. I do realize this issue and is thoroughly compile related branches to strengthen my final topic by listing their main ideas and approaches to reach conclusions. Filtering those non-related topics, I choose topics that people generally cares more about like drinking water quality or North America water conditions. School library also had many classifications of water quality and climate change which I could more easily discern the related topics with same purposes and interest to add evidence to my project. The most significant piece of research I found would for sure be the one from Climate Change and Effects on Water Quality: A First Impression (Senhorst, H. A. J.,2005). This research specifically making the scenario of floods that affect water quality into low and high intensity based on their intensity. This evidence is important because it provide a new eyesight into looking at the effect of climate change on water quality for it concludes that average discharge hardly affect the water quality. This could become a perfect topic to lead out discussions and further research. And actually because of this article I am more intrigued to plumb further into the way climate changes influence water quality. By checking the data and experiment of other research that primarily focused on detecting differences in changes in river’s morphology and sediments. And this is actually an interesting phenomenon itself which matches how I want to choose topics that my audience maybe interested and intrigued to read on.
Annotated Bibliography
The annotated bibliography had really comprised a major training upon my ability to spot and allocating central thesis and information in scientific articles and researches. climate change and water qualityWHITEHEAD, P. G., et al. “A Review of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Surface Water Quality.” Hydrological Sciences Journal, vol. 54, no. 1, Taylor & Francis Group, 2009, pp. 101–23, https://doi.org/10.1623/hysj.54.1.101.This book acknowledges the impacts upon climate change on water supply and had stated changes in air temperature which changes the river flows could change the mobility of contaminants. Also increased water temperature would affect chemical reaction kinetics. This would facilitate me explaining the origin of water change.Delpla, I., et al. “Impacts of Climate Change on Surface Water Quality in Relation to Drinking Water Production.” Environment International, vol. 35, no. 8, Elsevier Ltd, 2009, pp. 1225–33, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envint.2009.07.001.Besides previously stated points, this book additionally mentioned impacts on drinking water production and had conclude the deteriorated water from climate change could bring potential effect on health. This would broaden my topics. Senhorst, H. A. J., and J. J. G. Zwolsman. “Climate Change and Effects on Water Quality: a First Impression.” Water Science and Technology, vol. 51, no. 5, 2005, pp. 53–59, https://doi.org/10.2166/wst.2005.0107.
Li2Dividing the situation into two, the book investigates water quality under low flow and high extreme and to find out there should be a case-by-case difference in experiment. That is, changes in quality seems to be largest in extreme situations like flood and relatively low or unchanged under average discharge situations. This helps me to dive into further depth upon how actually intensity of climate changes could alter water quality.Komatsu, Eiji, et al. “A Modeling Approach to Forecast the Effect of Long-Term Climate Change on Lake Water Quality.” Ecological Modelling, vol. 209, no. 2, Elsevier B.V, 2007, pp. 351–66, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecolmodel.2007.07.021.This book is more interested in researching the long-term effect of global warming on environmental components like water temperature and oxygen concentration. To make this clearer, they compared data in a japan reservoir to find out the difference. This article would help me plumb the long-term effect of climate change on water quality.Murdoch, Peter S., et al. “POTENTIAL EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON SURFACEWATER QUALITY IN NORTH AMERICA1.” Journal of the American Water Resources Association, vol. 36, no. 2, Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2000, pp. 347–66,https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1752-1688.2000.tb04273.x.This article in turn focuses on surface water quality in North America and listed examples of storms, snowmelt and increased air temperature which could cause scenarios that exceeds the
Li3thresholds of ecosystem and deteriorating water quality. This helps me locate one specific region
