1. One key similarity between IT and "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" is how naive and vulnerable the children are when put in a position of danger. For example, in IT Georgie believed Pennywise into thinking that he was a good clown and would give him a balloon if Georgie went with him. In "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" Connie also believed that Arthur had good intentions with her and wouldn’t be a harmful situation. In both of these examples the children lack experience in life and therefore haven’t discovered the evil hidden in pretty lies. Also, both Arthur and Pennywise didn’t force the kids to join them but since they know that kids fall for pretty lies it felt more like a game to them if they gave them a choice. One key difference is that Connie liked the attention from boys and didn’t need Arthur to give her an object back, she just wanted male attention. On the other hand, Pennywise took Georgie’s boat and was given the option of getting the boat back or losing it forever. These details help us understand in the Suburban Gothic genre that the main victim of these stories are vulnerable people who don’t realize the harmful positions they are in since they haven’t discovered evil in the world yet. This is how the attackers win against their prey because they know that by lying with pretty lies or desires the kids will fall for their requests. Suburban Gothic genre emphasizes how naive people can be and don’t force them to accept their request but the victims usually do because of mental manipulation.
