Writing 39C: Self-Assessment

Prompt - You and UCI: How have your experiences in your writing classes at UCI influenced your personal history as a writer in academic contexts? Has the WR39 series of courses influenced your ability to make effective choices about how to approach writing assignments in other classes? Assignments such as lab reports, business memos, blue book exams, short response papers, and any other examples of writing you have been assigned here at UCI? In other words, have you applied what you learned in the WR 39 series to writing assignments in other classes? Have other classes and assignments influenced your writing process; if so, which ones? Please explain using specific examples.

My experiences in my writing classes at UCI have influenced my personal history as a writer in academic contexts by broadening my capabilities of communicating, as well as my confidence in my composition works. My strengths and weaknesses in writing had been pointed out, along with the various ways in which I could begin to work on them. It had become evident that my strengths as a writer had been perseverance - as I was almost always overcoming writer’s block - and staying focused because in most cases and situations, I am instantly able to catch any errors I make. Word choices that I tend to incorporate in my assignments had also been demonstrated as a strength of mine since their versatility shined through and I would try to avoid repeating myself with terms too often. However, repetition can additionally act as a very significant and profound weakness of mine. A particular correction that I have been given in the past is that sometimes, my essays or assignments can get too redundant or wordy. I always try to work harder and harder to fix this problem, and I believe I have slowly been getting better at solving it. The Writing 39 series of courses have greatly affected and influenced my ability to make effective choices regarding how to approach writing assignments in other classes.

As an instance, in my Writing 39A course, I noticed the drastic changes in my style of writing, especially for one of our assignments, where we were told to pick an event that occurred to us in which we learned an important lesson in order to imply our thesis and its purpose. Since the age of three, dance has and may always be my biggest passion. I chose to write about my experience being a dancer for sixteen years. More specifically, I shared a moment where my realization regarding the stereotypes and expectations for dancers came to life, and when I chose to step away after all of the mental and physical hardships I endured. Below is my First Draft of the essay, compared to my Final Draft.

I have been assigned numerous types of assignments in this series of Writing 39 classes, ranging from group discussions, memos, research papers, short response papers, and lastly, rhetorical analysis papers. I have indeed applied the things and lessons I learned in the Writing 39 series to my writing assignments in my other classes. I learned how to manage my time in a more efficient manner. In the past, I would work profusely in one assignment and then have no energy to finish any other work I had to do. Now, thanks to this series of courses, I have learned methods of working and taking small breaks in between so that I can complete more in a smaller amount of time, rather than working on one thing and not having the motivation to complete anything after that due to feeling so drained. Last quarter, I took a Criminology, Law and Society course in which our class wrote two essay papers a week, and taking Writing 39A and Writing 39B helped me immensely in preparing for that. I have also learned how to be more open to peer reviews and group discussions. Ever since I was younger, I would regularly prefer to work independently because I was anxious to talk to and interact with others. I was extremely introverted and liked working on things on my own instead of getting help from other individuals. In these writing classes, I was able to make several friends and receive an exceedingly large amount of feedback from them, which had been very helpful. Because of this class, I grew more open to taking in and listening to other people’s opinions and ideas.

Other classes and assignments have influenced my writing processes. For example, in my Biology courses from both the Fall and Winter Quarters, I took time in analyzing my prompts or questions I had of my own. I would attempt to define and acknowledge the argument I was going to make, and would utilize my organizational skills to overcome certain difficulties I had with some assignments. The series of Writing 39 courses have taught me to the greatest extent in such a short and limited amount of time. I do not think that ever in my life or educational experiences, there has been a class such as these, where I learned about several ways to improve my writing and also got to work on myself. Not only did this course guide me in becoming a better writer, but as tacky as it sounds, it guided me into becoming a better individual. The meaning behind the class prompts and inquiries we had been assigned goes so much deeper than I would have ever even assumed. Similar to the endless process of advancing to imaginative literature, I know I yet have to search for more continuously until I reach the intentions of my views. Everything that I have left to do is to simply sustain in employing the things I have acquired and use it to think about the world itself differently, in a way I could never have before these courses. I am grateful for choosing to take these series of courses, and I am looking forward to completing the third course this quarter!
