Part 1
Write a 1-page essay that names and describes current research in the area of EECS that you are interested in. Choose a field in either the Computer Engineering or the Electrical Engineering disciplines, outline its purpose and research goals, and describe a possible scenario in which you would like to work in this field. In other words, think about your own professional future and where you see yourself in 10 years from now. Feel free to outline multiple paths if you are not sure where you're leaning towards.
For the research area, your essay may discuss currently available technology, possible new developments, and novel designs that may be coming in the next decade. Provide proper references to publications your are basing your text on, for example, to IEEE or ACM journals.
For your professional career, identify the sector you want to work in (e.g. academia or industry), and possible employers or entrepreneurship.
Your essay should be 1 page long (in 10 or 11-point font) and contain the following sections:
- Title and Author
- Overview and Challenges in [NAME_OF_CHOSEN_AREA]
- Career Opportunities in [NAME_OF_CHOSEN_AREA]
Part 2
Complete a plan‐of‐study for your own timeline at UCI that will prepare you for working in the field and career path described in Part 1. Start with the first quarter of enrollment at UCI and end with the quarter of expected graduation. Include all courses you have taken already and the courses you need to graduate in your chosen area and/or specialization.
Your plan of study should be detailed and specific to your own course work. For each course, show the specific year and quarter and identify required courses and technical electives. Show that the chosen courses satisfy all requirements for your major and chosen specialization (if applicable). Ensure that future courses are listed during a quarter when these courses are normally taught and that you take courses in an order that satisfies all applicable prerequisites.
Your plan of study should fit on 1 page and be created in tabular format or as graphical chart (not in essay/text format). As examples, please refer to the flow charts provided on the Engineering Plaza site, i.e. CpE Plan of Study or EE Plans of Study.
Note: If you are not sure about the specific course requirements for your desired specialization, feel free to discuss this with your counselor in the Office of Undergraduate Affairs in HSSOE. Note that the course instructors cannot help with your specific plan of study as much as your counselor can, because the access to your individual course enrollment is restricted.
