I believe that Steinbeck is trying to convey Cannery Row as being a small town, with a forgotten feel. He does so by saying “Cannery row is the gathered and scattered,… chipped pavement and weedy lots and junk heaps.” This gives the feeling of the town being forgotten and untouched. Steinbeck also gives a small town feel. “Lee Chong’s grocery,... a man could find everything he needed or wanted to live and to be happy.” This quote goes into detail about the town’s general store, which are typically found in small towns. Also Steinbeck writes about “Horace said earnestly,”if i was to give you that place - would it clear me up with you?... “shu” said Lee Chong… “no need papers...I make paid-in-full paper.” This quote shows the small town feel by showing two people trading debt for a building without a lawyer or proper paperwork.
