Hello all!

My name is Stephanie Iraheta and welcome to my Writing 39C portfolio! My portfolio is a collection of works through out quarter. My focus within the class was mainly on sex and gender within video games, more specifically analyzing sexual harassment within the social virtual world of video games and how that creates a toxic environment for womxn. Womxn is a term I prefer to use in my writing to remove the word "man" within woman to remove the reliance that it provokes within the word as well as to add more inclusivity to the definition of a womxn. As well as, many stereotypes such as womxn belonging in the kitchen are a long stereotype that tend to devalue womxn and treat them as a mens' tool than a womxn who is equitable to a man. As a latina womxn I tend to see these stereotypes being force upon me in my life not just in the physical world but the virtual one that exist within my generation. The sexual harassment that I have encountered walking down the street or even posting a selfie in my instagram.

"Hey sexy" has been said so many times to me and so many other womxn in the physical and virtual world. It is supposed to make us "glad" that a man has put his attention on us, as if we are made for a man's gaze. But, many things I have learned within these to worlds is that the most important gaze I should be worrying about is my own. How do I see myself and how do I treat myself, there is so many images we go through in one day that I forget to check up and look at our own needs our body scream for me to notice. But a man's gaze is what society wants us to prioritize am I gaining to much weight to the point to where I am unattractive, do I make myself look to dumb where people might not take me seriously. Am I not feminine enough because I worry more about my grades instead of worrying about who my ex partner is dating now. All these forced ideals create anxiety, stress, fear and so many more attributes that make it difficult to breathe within the society we live in. So the question I asked myself within this class was how can we alter the way society is in order for womxn to be able to play video games without being attacked by menIf starting somewhere means to start in video games what would that look like? So, within the 10 weeks of the class I research the history of why this brand new society of the virtual world had already been infested with sexual harassment and other actions that make it a toxic community for womxn. The history that i wrote in my HCP shows how womxn history within video games started with the representation of womxn that that later developed the normalization to rape culture to summarize in a few words. So, in my AP I wanted to advocate for something that actually was going to make a change to the world we currently socialize in. Which meant that there had to be a change from how rape culture is normalized through sexual harassment training to understand how to keep oneself and the other around you accountable. Also by teach people how to keep themselves and others accountable and to understand how to do the through role play in video games. For this solution is a great step in the right direction to slowly find a way that womxn aren't afraid to  play a video game they really enjoy without receiving a death threat to their family if they don't show their "titties" or to be able to walk through a street without a man forcing their gaze upon them.

This is a great introduction as a sort of intellectual biography of what brings you to your topic, with a few gestures towards some of the main questions/concerns of the e-Portfolio rubric. However, was this intended to be the graded portion of the assignment (see note on your next page)? If this is the case, as it stands it reads like a very rough draft. We can talk details in office hours about how to move forward from a general biography of what you wrote and why you were interested in pursuing the topic to an argument/analysis of what you learned about research and the composition process.
