My AP Prospectus was a stepping stone for me to brainstorm ideas that I wish to argue in my AP project. This was also helpful in terms of structuring the paper as it provided some initial thoughts to begin with.
Summary of Policies
- This effort from Google urges law enforcement to obtain a search warrant before asking Google to send the location data of suspects. Google thinks the requests they receive are too broad and hopes to protect its users’ privacy further. The benefit of this effort is to stop law enforcement from abusively using location data when it's not necessary. However, the extra work in acquiring a search warrant may increase the cost and time of enforcing the law.
- The Intel Draft is an effort from Intel that urges federal privacy legislation similar to the GDPR of the European Union but revised to fit the United States. To accomplish this, Intel also thinks the Division of Privacy and Identity within FTC needs to increase its staff to at least 500 people. The benefit is the privacy of Americans would be better protected. Implementing this change, though, will be costly in time and money. Intel explains some misuses of GDPR in Europe, which is likely to happen again in the U.S..
- This is an effort from the Electronic Frontier Foundation that urges the FTC to investigate stalkerware apps to protect domestic consumers. The FTC already did historical actions against a few specific companies against stalkerware apps. The benefit of this action is it may reduce the number of stalkerwares on the market.
- I will advocate for the Intel Draft. It is created by Intel, which is a manufacture for semiconductors. The official Intel document was published in May of 2019. The idea is only proposed as a drafted bill, called the Innovative and Ethical Data Use Act of 2019. I plan to compare this effort with the GDPR of the EU and evaluate how this effort is going to be better suitable for the United States. I will also compare this effort with past legislation to measure the new proposal's effectiveness and improvements. There were also three drafts to this bill which can be used to observe new considerations from Intel since the first draft.
- Intel’s advocacy effort will be a significant step forward for data privacy protection in the United States. This effort includes many specific sections instead of simply stating a generalized viewpoint. Since a technology industry company delivers this effort, it can be relatable to data privacy concerns.
