Additionally, poverty does not provide a child the home environment to develop their cognitive skills. Several studies, including one from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Early Child Care Research Network, have demonstrated the clear effects that poverty has on the child’s performance, more specifically their cognitive skills.

These are the topic sentences I included in my HCP essay. By simply reading the highlighted sentences, one can observe that there is no sense of fluidity between the paragraphs. These topic sentences do, however, provide insight to the topic of discussion within each paragraph.

In contrast to the HCP, the use of narrative topic sentences allows to develop a coherent discussion. This adds the effect of a story which ultimately allows for the reader to be able to flow through the ideas. Not only do the topic sentences connect with one another but they also further the argument being made throughout the essay.
