After reading up on several narrative essays, we were ready to start the first draft. The food I chose that defined me was a Lebanese pastry called Fatayer bi Sabanekh - spinach filled baked dough like you'd never believe. Fatayer bi Sabanekh (Lebanese Spinach Pies) - Tara's Multicultural Table

  • It was a simple 830 word piece focusing solely on the description of the dish, and making the readers see, feel, and taste it.
  • It was a hard task at first, so I started working on it relatively early. I like visiting my work often, so I give myself time to sit with the writing.

I felt proud of my first draft. Drafts later it did improve, however I think I set a pretty good base.

  • After the first draft, I felt more comfortable with the words and the material I was working with. I felt ready and excited to write more. After going in detail about the pastry and all there is to it, as well as it's taste, the feelings it evoked, I was trying my best to give the readers an insight on how it feels to eat it.
  • My second draft was me adding more depth to the dish by explaining the series f events that lead up to the moment I first ate this dish. I added very hefty memories, and events filled emotional significance to highlight this dish's true impact it had on me. I wanted the readers to understand where I was coming from, and make the feel if only a fraction of what I felt!

I delved deep into my subconscious and searched for those big moments that I felt truly defined this dish and wrote until my heart's content.
