Reflection:

This canvas assignment asked us to read a dark fairy tale and analyze it. Within the post, we had to explain why it fits the dark fairy tale genre and what conventions were used that led us to conclude so.  This was the first time I would be reading and analyzing a dark fairy tale on my own and this would set the tone for the way I would write about them moving forward in the class.

This type of writing would come again and again over the weeks and this being my first served to be a great learning point. Given this low-stakes assignment I was able to see the parts I got right and the other parts I got wrong. Being able to look at my classmate's answers as well as their own perspectives was eye-opening. This type of writing has proved to be useful in both my GA and IP as analyzing the dark fairytale genre is a critical part of both, so starting this early with training myself to better analyze these texts was very important.

Canvas Post:

By looking at the Brothers Grimm version of Snow white, we can see that it fits the genre of a dark fairytale through the characters. For the most part, many of the characters remain unchanged throughout the story. Snow Whtite can be seen as the innocent child who doesn’t know anything about the world. The seven dwarfs are there to watch over Snow White and protect her from any trouble she might encounter through the queen. The Queen on the other hand is the most dynamic character in the story. She goes from being content as she was once the prettiest girl in the land to becoming jealous and eventually reaching insanity after being told snow white was prettier than her. This also isn’t your typical evil where they would want to banish the girl but instead have sent hunters to not only kill but to take her lungs and liver so that the queen could eat them.  This type of evil goes beyond what is conventionally thought of as evil within a fairy tale. Instead of going to more ethical tactics, the queen instead goes straight to violence as a way to get rid of her problems. The thought of doing anything else never even came across her mind which is another indicator as to how this fits the dark fairytale genre In addition, the way the characters are introduced also play into how this is a dark fairytale. We start off with the introduction of Snow White as she gets born which then transitions into the introduction of the queen and her wanting to be “the fairest one of all”. We slowly see this want become a need for the queen as Snow White continues to become even prettier as she grows up. Already showing the sense of evil building up in the story. The queen eventually sends a hunter to kill Snow White but it only causes Snow white to escape into the woods which are known as a symbol of “Evil” in fairy tales. This is where we get introduced to the seven dwarfs, mythical creatures that live in the dark forest. Magic also plays a significant role in the story as without the magic mirror, the queen would’ve never developed this obsession with being the “fairest one of all”. Also in her attempts to kill Snow White on her one she used a poison apple and comb.
