Throughout the course of the quarter I have definitely developed as a writer. If I were able to give my prior self advice on my previous reflections, I would likely say do not underestimate the power of writing multiple drafts for a writing piece. Being able to start working, take a break, then come back and work again, you can often come up with ideas that you would not be able to when working in big blocks of times. Also, revisiting drafts usually helps in creating flow through a writing piece, as the more you review the better you are at coming up with ways to transition from one topic to another. The genre analysis essay definitely helped my improve in my implementation of signal phrases when integrating quotations into my work. I also believe that implementing a cluster map (Pictured Below) for my genre analysis essay helped me organize my thoughts and choose what I wanted to write about. I believe as an academic writer my biggest flaw is using too many words to convey a point, I believe I can be a lot more concise in my word choice, but this conflicts with the need to meet certain word counts on assignments. I enjoyed peer review; I have never really done academic peer review so the experience was very useful as a writer. Other people's suggestions are useful as they give a viewpoint that is different from yours as a writer. Through the rest of the quarter I hope to be more proactive when it comes to starting my work, and spending multiple sessions writing and revising essays as I have learned that doing so makes the quality of my writing much better. In order to enact this goal, I will begin working on an assignment the day it is assigned and revisit it, rather than completing the assignment in one long block session. I am anticipating this imitation project, as I have never done anything like it. I predict that the same critical reading and rhetorical analysis will be required in this project as well, as it must be important to understand the rhetorical situation of the work you are imitating before you are able to imitate it. I do think the style of writing will be slightly different though, as communicating to a public audience rather than an academic community warrants altering your word choice and sentence structure.
