The Importance of Multi-Modal Sources

One of the most important thing that I learned from this course is the importance of using Multi-Modal sources. My HCP rough draft was like a mess with a lot of problems there. One problem was the  lack of multi-modal sources. I did not use even a single graph in the rough draft. After doing a lot research, I then added multi-modal sources in the later HCP final draft and AP drafts. These were the sources I used in HCP drafts.

Fig. 1: The city with severe fog-haze in Beijing. A man wears a mask on Tiananmen Square in thick haze in Beijing.

This picture was used to show bad air quality in Beijing in winter of 2013.

Fig.2 Increase in coal production out of China.

This figure was used to show that the annual coal production had increased from 2.5 billion tons to 3.6 billion tons in China, and to describe the relationship between haze and coal burning.

Fig 3. The cities shown are the locations of capital cities of 34 provinces. Cities of north of the solid line were covered by the home heating policy.

This figure revealed that the Chinese government chose the Huai River and Qingling Mountain as the line to divide North and South China. In the Northern China, the heating system was driven by coal burning.

Table 1. Source, health effects, and World Health Organization guidelines on major ambient air pollutants. Journal of Thoracic Disease

This table was used to show the health effects and WHO guidelines about particulate matter.

In Advocacy Project draft, I also used several sources to support my research paper. For example.

Figure 2 Summary of the studies on health effects of haze pollution in China.

This figure was used to show that PM2.5 had been associated with various adverse health effects, such as pathophysiological biomarkers of adverse cardiopulmonary events, respiratory symptoms, and reduced lung function.

Figure 3. SO2, fly ash, and dust emissions in Hebei Province in 1998-2010 (Wang et al. 5)

This figure was used to show the industrial dust and SO2 emissions from 1998 to 2010.

Air Quality Improvement Goal

  1. By 2017, the urban concentration of PM10 shall decrease by 10% compared with 2012; annual number of days with fairly good air quality will gradually increase
  2. Concentration of PM2.5 in the BTH, YRD and PRD regions shall respectively fall by around 25%, 20% and 15%
  3. PM2.5 annual concentration in Beijing shall be controlled below 60 mg/m3

Ten Tasks

  1. Increase effort of comprehensive control and reduce emission of multi-pollutants
  2. Optimize the industrial structure, promote industrial restructure
  3. Accelerate the technology transformation, improve the innovation capability
  4. Adjust the energy structure and increase the clean energy supply
  5. Strengthen environmental thresholds and optimize industrial layout
  6. Better play the role of market mechanism and improve environmental economic policies
  7. Improve law and regulation system. Carry on supervision and management based on law
  8. Establish the regional coordination mechanism and the integrated regional environmental management
  9. Establish monitoring and warning system. Cope with pollution episodes
  10. Clarify the responsibilities of the government, enterprise and society. Mobilize public participation

Figure 4. China National Action Plan on Air Pollution Prevention and Control (2013–2017) (Environ).

This figure was used to show that the monitoring and warning systems and law and regulation system should be concerned. These multi-model sources could make my essays more professional and credible.
