AP Proposal/Brainstorm

This is what I came up with for my AP Proposal. I had a difficult time trying to come up with solutions with DACA and as you can see, I didn't do enough research to advocate with these solutions. This shows how much I struggled in beginning my AP project.

Proposal/brainstorming:

As we come to the AP phase of the course, there are bound to be arguments that propose certain “solutions” or steps toward addressing the issues that you are exploring. The first part of this short assignment asks you to take a sort of inventory of these arguments by thinking and writing about some of them. The second part asks you to brainstorm some of your own.

I.

What are some “solutions” or steps toward solutions that you’ve come across in your research thus far? Try to identify at least 3-5. Also, if you are short on “solutions” what types of sources do you think you should look for in more research?

Solutions:

  1. Have daca students serve in the military to prove that they want to be here
  2. Exam that tests their educational ability. If they are at the average or pass the state’s average test score, they are allowed to stay. (Brain Drain)
  3. Amnesty period… looking at how Reagan did it.. Can we do it again?
  4. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell my Immigration Status
  5. Keep Daca!! Good Behavior, such as going to a higher education, serving in military, paying taxes. A background check.

Pick 2 of these “solutions” and briefly evaluate each one (a paragraph or two each). Tip: you may want to use a cost/benefit or pro/con analysis here. Something to address or at least think about for each one is the question: is there anything missing from the proposed “solution”? In other words, is there any data or information that would help us evaluate the proposed “solution”?

  1. Good Behavior (#5): Daca helps those achieve higher education and will end up benefitting the economy after they are done with college. What should be done is that the government should monitor those under daca and those are undocumented must be here on good behavior- they cannot be caught doing drugs, be expelled in school, gone to prison, etc. If they are caught doing these things, they must face the consequences. There can be an appeal where the person who has done something wrong can go to court and tell the judge why they should be here and if the judge/panel can decide if he’s given another chance but must undergo rehab/serve in military/community service, etc. Those who are on good behavior and are pursuing a greater life than would benefit the U.S. are allowed to stay here under DACA. Once they provide or show their value, they will undergo another trial where it dictates if they should receive residency.

  1. Military Service (#1)/Exams (#2): I ended up combining both ideas on this one for a reason. I think that we can use DACA to be similar to a Brain Drain. The Brain Drain is where we allow immigrants to come to the United States and in return they need to present their intelligence here. We can do something similar where DACA students must be able to pass a test to show that they should belong here. The test should exceed the average student in the state. By doing this, DACA students have more of an incentive to do better in school and then the Latino rates of graduation, college attendance can go up. However, if a student cannot pass the test, they will be automatically enrolled in the military/army/navy/etc. and must serve for four years. After that, they can go to a college and try to go for a higher education or maintain in the military/army/navy/etc.

II.

Please make a short list of some “solutions” or steps to addressing your issue. These don’t have to be fully formed yet, but it is important that you start to articulate your own advocacy arguments for your issue at this point in the writing process.

Pick 2 of these “solutions” and do the same as you did for part I.

List:

  1. Schools to provide bilingual education
  2. Tracking
  3. Inclusion

Solutions:

  1. When schools provide bilingual education or dual language education, students are more likely to grasp onto the concept more and are able to understand it. Those who are Latino have a chance to excel and those who only speak one language have the opportunity to learn and speak both languages. This would also provide a progressive educational system.

  1. We can use tracking to keep an eye on students who are more likely to fall into bad habits and bad behavior. We can create a guidance counselor who must work with all undocumented students to see how they are doing and what they must do in order to pass the exam or be ready to go into the military.
