  1. Basics
  2. What is your tentative topic, and why?

My tentative topic is addiction of video games among young kids because as technology advances, this continues to be a problem.

  1. What is your tentative thesis? Remember, your thesis can be longer than one sentence and should ask and/or answer how and why questions. Hint: Why is this problem important today and how does it connect to the past/what are its root causes? The answer can be re-phrased as your thesis, if you choose.

Throughout the years technological advances have led to creating the most sophisticated video games in known to man but it has affected America’s future; kids. Nowadays, kids are spending way too much playing video games and the addiction has affected not only their physical health but their social skills.

  1. Scope
  2. What place(s) are you discussing? I will be focusing on the U.S.
  3. What slice(s) of history are you discussing? I will be talking about the first video game to attract kids and how it grew from there.
  4. What group of people are you focusing on? Are there any additional groups that are affected? If so, will you mention them? Why or why not? I am mostly focusing on young children from the age of 10-16
  5. What specific law(s) and/or cultural phenomena do you intend to mention? I feel like you can’t put laws on video games because it’s not a big issue that is endangering others. However, I think this can apply to many cultures because this problem is with kids from all backgrounds. Their addiction is not because of their culture but how they’re raise

III. Perspective and Audience

  1. Who is your audience? What assumptions are you making about the beliefs of your audience? Are there any beliefs that you do not plan to discuss directly that you assume the audience shares with you?

My audience is people whose kids are addicted to playing video games but they may not know why. I am assuming that if they are not experiencing this then they are educating themselves about kids becoming addicted.

  1. Imagine a person who comes from a very different context from your own who does not share your beliefs and would be likely to disagree with your thesis. (Remember, your thesis is an argument, i.e. someone should be able to disagree with it.) What beliefs would your opponent be bringing? What are the best arguments that someone could make against your tentative thesis? Some people can say that you cannot be addicted to video games but someone can be addicted to anything. Addiction is not being to do your daily activities because your addiction gets in the way or if you don’t fulfill it then it will negatively affect you.
  2. Multimodality

What kinds of images are you planning to include? (Think about what would be most convincing/strategic.)

I am planning on showing several images. I want to show graphs showing how kids’ education has gone down because of the distraction of video games or show how playing too much can affect a child’s health.

  1. Questions

What are you struggling with most at this moment?

I am struggling with making a stronger thesis so that I can get my argument across. I know what I want to say but I need to figure out how to word it better.

  1. Outline

Please write a basic outline of the structure of your HCP as you see it right now. Example (feel free to use this model; just fill it in with your own project terms):

  1. Introduction, including a thesis

Many people have praised technological advances because it makes life easier to live and more fun. They get so wrapped up with technology that they do not notice the negative affects it can have. Throughout the years technological advances have led to creating the most sophisticated video games known to man but it has affected America’s future; kids. Nowadays, kids are spending way too much playing video games and the addiction has affected not only their physical health but their social skills. Some kids spend so much time playing games that they forget to go outside, socialize, and even do their homework. This leads to health problems, social problems, and affects their education.

  1. The Problem Today and Why It's Important

The problem is that people don’t realize kids are addicted because they fail to recognize it. Kids do no think they are addicted and parents do not know how to help their kids. The reason they are addicted could be more than just them liking them the game. It is important to recognize the problem and to fix it so that these kids can have a better life.

  • History/Origination of the Problem

The first game ever made was thanks to the army and their technology. It was a hard time filled with war so making these games was a good distraction. Most addicting games from virtual worlds. It has been hard to identify video game addictions because not many people this addiction exits but it does.

  1. How the History Connects to Today, Root Cause

Well because of the first video game ever made, it has led to the making of many different types of video games.

  1. Conclusion

Even though video game addiction may not seem real, it odes exist and it does affect many kids. It is important to fix this at a young age so that they can live a better life.

In this exercise I was able to state the problem but I did not state the root cause of problem. My peer who reviewed my proposal helped me in suggesting topics I could research in order to find more information. Also I did not have good counterarguments but this was because I had not done enough research. This proposal really helped me get an idea of what the HCP should consist of and it was also a wake up call that I was going to need more research in order to write a good essay.

39C HCP Proposal Peer Review - Genesis Ruth Sanchez's proposal.

Reviewed by Tuan Lam

Basics
Does your partner’s tentative topic sound feasible? Some questions to figure this out…do you think they will be able to find enough research? Is the counterargument too strong? Is it too broad/big? Is it too narrow? Or is it just right? Help them out or tell them they are doing great.

The tentative topic is a good topic to start with, it might sound a little too broad but my partner narrows it down to how "video game addiction affects children's social skills"

Does the thesis statement tell us what the problem is and why it’s important? Does it go beyond this and relate to history and/or a root cause? What recommendations can you make to them about their thesis?

The thesis is quite straight forward to the point to be made, which is good. Though it hasn't reach the root cause to the problem just yet, it's a good starting point, which can lead to a lot of researching through the paper.

Scope
Do you get the sense that your partner has done enough research to know who, what, where, and when they are going to write about? If not, can you offer any specific insight into what they should look into? What are the missing pieces they need to research next? What keywords can you suggest, based on what they’ve written?

Focusing on the U.S is a good place to start, but "when" is a little too broad still, as in WHEN (what year, i.e when video games were created, when kids are exposed to technology etc..). In my opinion, the targeted grouping could be teenagers grade 1-12. Doing so would allow the the researcher to have a wider target to compare and contrast the effects. I would suggest to look up these keywords: socialization, obsession, potential cognitive development.

III. Audience

Do you think your partner has thought through the counterargument deeply and thoroughly enough? Can you suggest other counterarguments that they might not have written? If they don’t have a strong enough argument to argue against yet, how can you help them strengthen their thesis?

The target audience that the researcher is aiming at is quite interesting when an obsessed video gamer actually takes time to read an article that goes against their point of view. The counter argument needs to be from these addicted gamers, such as video games can't be addicted. A professional gamer can argue that gaming is there daily job, is their financial source. Some professional gamers starts as young as 14,15 years old.

Multimodality
What images do you think would be most convincing for your partner to utilize? Why?

The graph of the corrrelation between academic results vs time spent on gaming can be convincing, but there are other factors that effect their studying results, such as family condition, health condition, etc.. Maybe the researcher can provide a before and after head shot of a student before playing games and 3 months, 6 months after playing games.

Questions
What is your partner struggling with? What suggestions can you offer them?

The researcher (you) might find that there are a lot of counter argument from an opposing person, therefore, looking for the best evidence to persuade the audience can be challenging. But you can use pathos, logos and framing method to provide the best argument.
