Rhetoric, Argumentation & Multimodal

Through the process of generating two multimodal compositions, I learned that an argument can be made for anything, by anyone, as long as they have evidence. Even though I was totally convinced that video game addiction is real, I came across so many sources, during my research, that contested otherwise. I do have to admit, if I were someone who didn’t have any preconceived opinions on this matter, I would find these sources persuasive enough. Something all these sources, including my own compositions, had in common were its usage of multimodal sources. When people are able to see for themselves the cause and effect of something, they may be more convinced to believe whatever it is you are trying to prove. Visual evidence can be powerful because it allows the audience to see the results for themselves. By using multimodal sources that display data or images, I am able to articulate my argument through engagement of the audience. Another way that we are able to articulate an argument is by reiterating its importance through counterarguments. By including counterarguments after your claim, you are proving to the audience that you have thought this through and weighed out various aspects of your issue. By anticipating the responses that go against your particular claim, you are able to explain why your opinion is superior despite what others say about it. For example, the counterargument that I presented in my advocacy projectLinks to an external site. mentions the doubts that surround the idea of gaming addiction. In my source documentLinks to an external site., I highlighted the main counterarguments made against my case and annotated a few of my immediate thoughts against their claim. This extra step helped organize my thoughts to form a structured rebuttal before writing this portion of the essay.
