A. Class-time: Converse with your 39a "companions"

"[C]ompanion” is . . . latin and literally translates to 'bread fellow' or somebody you break bread with"-- Digidave (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Directions:

1. Decide whose snack you'll eat first. Hand it out. Make sure all 4 of you get a portion.

2. Simultaneously eat that snack as a group (i.e. everyone eats celery), talking as you go (with your mouth full? Maybe). Learn together how to name the snack's smell, taste, appearance, and texture. Each person takes his/her own notes, writing down your group's descriptions on your own paper. Bullet points/lists are fine.

3. Repeat the above process for each of the other 3 snacks (decide who's next, chips or nuts, etc.), talking, snacking, with each student filling out a total of 4 sets of notes.

4. Privately, pick your most or least favorite snack. What's disgusting? What's delightful? (You don't have to tell your peers why you picked theirs, right?)  Then begin your . . .

B. Homework: Snack Review

Write a snack review telling readers in our other 39A class about your most or least favorite snack of today's 4 snacks, advising them on whether or not they should sample it. Write about 100-150 words. Photograph optional.

Include:

  • Use what you learned from Wilder: Write in a relatable, informal voice. Reference ideas or experiences or foods your 39a peers can relate to, or that communicate your own personality and tastes (see models below). Use similes/metaphors, humor, comparisons to other foods, etc. as desired.
  • Title: What food it is you're reviewing (What is it? Who manufactures it?)
  • Rating: On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, like on Yelp. 5 stars = amazingly delicious! 1 star = disgusting, bleh.
  • Descriptions that support that rating. Use precise nouns, active verbs, and colorful adjectives/adverbs. Try to include 4 aspects: smell, taste, appearance, and texture. If it helps you find the right words, refer to the taste worksheet:

C. Reflect:

After you turn in your review, post in the comment box alongside your review, explaining (in about 75 words) a few techniques that you imitated from the models:
