For this assignment, we're practicing writing and reading topic sentences. The goal is to make your organization of your paragraphs in your Major Assignment 2 less monotonous, and to read Holland's masterful writing with an eye for her organization (in the hopes of improving your own).

From the Paragraph Unity Handout, complete Assignment 3 on pg. 260 and Assignment 4 on page 261.

For Assignment 3, use your Major Assignment 2. (That is, rearrange a few of your body paragraphs from Major Assignment 2.) To see how a topic sentence can fit in the middle or end of a paragraph, it may help you to read the sample paragraphs on pg. 257-58, or even to do Exercise 6 on pg. 258.

For Assignment 4, find paragraphs from two different Barbara Holland essays that we have NOT yet read as a class (so, you can't use "Coffee," "Cigarettes," "Spring," etc.). In other words, read some more Holland and find when she's using implied topic sentences, then follow the Assignment 3 directions about transcribing the paragraphs and creating the topic sentences for them. Label each of these paragraphs with the title of the essay in which it appears, and the page #.

Bonus: Cut the topic sentence out from one of your Major Assignment 2 paragraphs entirely, so that it's instead implied by all the details in the paragraph. Then paste that paragraph here.
